With Mary Maxim Mellowspun Yarn for the main solid color and Mary Maxim Prism Yarn (featuring slow ombre color changes) for the mosaic details, this crochet mosaic hat has a modern look that matches the Mosaic Ridge Adult Crochet Pullover.
What is overlay mosaic crochet in the round?
Mosaic overlay crochet is a colorwork technique where geometric patterns and designs are achieved by working with multiple colors of yarn without carrying strands across the back of the fabric. So this is different than a fair isle crochet because we are only working one color of yarn at a time.
Since each row is crocheted in one color, with stitches placed over previous rows to form the desired geometric shapes, or lines, it's a great into to crochet colorwork.
The process involves working regular stitches, like single crochets, along with longer stitches, such as double or treble crochets, which are "overlaid" onto stitches from earlier rows.
This creates a textured effect while allowing for complex designs to emerge. Mosaic overlay crochet is particularly popular for making bold, decorative items like blankets, garments, and accessories.

You'll only handle one color at a time, making the process both simple and fun. Tempted by mosaic colorwork? Try the Wish Upon a Star Cardigan or the Seabird Cardigan!
Special Stitches
Mosaic Double Crochet (mdc): is worked as a double crochet stitch, but it will be worked into the skipped stitch three rows below. This stitch will be worked on the front (or right sides) of the cardigan.
Extended half double crochet (Ehdc): is a variation of the half double crochet (Hdc) that adds a bit more height and drape to the stitch. Start by yarn over (YO) and insert your hook into the stitch, YO again and pull through the stitch (3 loops on your hook). YO and pull through the first loop on your hook only (3 loops on your hook). YO once more and pull through all three loops to complete the extended half double crochet.
Extended half double crochet 2 together (Ehdc2tog): yarn over (YO) and insert your hook into the stitch, YO again and pull through the stitch (3 loops on your hook), (YO) and insert your hook into the next stitch, YO again and pull through the stitch (4 loops on your hook). YO and pull through 2 loops on your hook only (3 loops on your hook). YO once more and pull through all three loops to complete the Ehdc2tog.
Pattern Notes
- Sizes are written as: Newborn (Baby, Toddler) (Child/Small Adult, Adult, Large Adult)
- Using a stitch marker at the beginning of the row or round is recommended.
- Do not ch 1 at the beg of row unless indicated.
- Overlay mosaic crochet for this pattern involves two colors. Each row is worked with a single color, alternating between them.
- Carry the color not in use inside of the work as you go.
- Colored squares on the outside of the red lines on the chart denote color to use for row.
- Blank squares in same color as worked single crochet stitches into the back loops only (BLO).
- Before you dive into your project, take a moment to identify the stitch and row counts that match the size you're making. By highlighting or marking them, you'll save time and effort later on. Trust us, this small step will make a big difference in your knitting or crochet journey!

Working Along the Brim
With H (5.0mm) Hook - for rest of hat
For this next step we will be working along the edge of the ribbing, placing one stitch per row as follows:
Rnd 1:
With Color B, sc into first edge space, *insert your hook into the left bar of the sc st, then insert into the next row space on the edge of the ribbing. Yarn over and pull a loop through the ribbing fabric and also through one loop on the hook. Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Repeat from * all the way around the edge of the brim, join. The rest of the pattern will be worked in rounds. | 42 (48, 56) (64, 72, 80) sts
Style
Change the look of this hat by modifying the colors! Try using contrasting solid colors for a bold, eye-catching look. Alternatively, you can create a subtler mosaic effect by using a single color with varying shades (either lighter or darker). You can also switch up the main and accent colors: try working the ribbing and main body of the hat in the color-changing Prism yarn while working the mosaic colorwork in a solid Mellowspun. Use your leftover yarns to make the Mellow Textured Hat or the Diamond Fair Isle Hat!

Finishing
Weave in all ends, wash, and lightly block if desired.
Storing your handmade hats and winter wearables is all about keeping them cozy and protected! For best results, wash your seasonal pieces in a mild detergent (or by hand) and lay them flat to dry. Once completely dry, fold them gently and place them in a breathable cotton bag or a clean, dry drawer.
Avoid hanging them to prevent stretching, and keep them away from direct sunlight to maintain those vibrant colors. If you have multiple pieces, consider using a shelf or basket to keep them organized and easy to find. If you need more pieces to add to your winter wearables, check out the Twisted Wheat Earwarmer and the Diamond Granny Hat!
Cheers, and happy crocheting!
